Lapis Lazuli


Overview
Lapis Lazuli is a blue gemstone which has been valued for its color for over 6,000 years. It was used as decoration by the Egyptians, Assyrians, and Babylonians, and can be considered a sign of great wealth. Later, in the Middle Ages, it was used as a pigment for paintings.

Layer Range: 1-34

Sweet Spot Layers: 14-22(Good), 17-19(Great), 13-16(Recommended)

Percentages by Layer
Lapis spawns in 0.075% of all stone at layer 18. Every layer above or below this layer, the rate drops off at an average of 0.00441%, reaching 0% at layers 0 and 35. By layers 10 and 26, Lapis is only half as common as layer 18.

Percentages by Quadrant:
NE: 0.060% - 1 in every 1666 blocks. 22.5 Lapis per diamond pickaxe.
NW: 0.075% - 1 in every 1333 blocks. 28.2 Lapis per diamond pickaxe.
SE: 0.075% - 1 in every 1333 blocks. 28.2 Lapis per diamond pickaxe.
SW: 0.090% - 1 in every 1111 blocks. 33.7 Lapis per diamond pickaxe.

  1. You should do this sort of things for all ores including coal :)

  2. i'm not sure if you know but the amount of ores in total is the same in all levels.
    For Example, on layer 16 there might be 10 diamonds, 30 coal 20 iron and 10 redstone. 70 ores.
    on layer 40 there might be 40 coal 20 iron 10 gold which would equate to 70 ores in total. I've read it on the forum so it's unconfirmed.

  3. I saw that thread. Unfortunately it wasn't backed by any numbers and is completely untrue. For example, on one map with 3900 chunks, there are:

    26608 total ore at layer 40
    27964 total ore at layer 30
    29006 total ore at layer 20
    40916 total ore at layer 14

    It's not true, and only based off a subjective look at a small sample size.
